Empowering Communities for Food Security

Farmers in Kyosiga Community Managed Saving Group (CMSG) have been introduced to climate-smart agricultural techniques that help them withstand the hard effects of climate change. Training in good agricultural practices (GAPs) like organic manure application, mulching, using high-quality planting materials, and effective water management has empowered them to cultivate healthier, more productive crops.

The community of Kigaya, home to Kyosiga CMSG, has long struggled with food shortages, particularly in staples like plantain bananas, maize, and sweet potatoes. This scarcity has led to malnutrition and high school dropout rates, especially among children. The expansion of the sugarcane industry has further limited arable land for food crops, deepening the food insecurity crisis.

Through formation of Community Managed Saving Groups (CMSGs), participants have gained vital knowledge in financial literacy, budgeting, and the power of cumulative savings. But our efforts go beyond finances. We focus on equipping farmers with the skills they need to thrive in agriculture, promoting sustainable practices that ensure long-term food security and improved nutrition.

Our seed multiplication demonstration centers have become hubs of learning and growth. Focused on plantain banana production, these centers also integrate tree planting to combat climate change, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

Our program has sparked a shift. Inspired by the training sessions, Kyosiga CMSG members began cultivating plantain bananas and leafy vegetables, ensuring food security at the household level while generating daily income from selling green vegetables.

In September 2024, AEE supplied Kyosiga CMSG fresh banana suckers and vegetable seeds, enabling the community to establish a demonstration seed multiplication center. This center serves as both a learning ground for group members and a resource for individual households to enhance their food production.

Harvesting of vegetables has already begun, bringing immediate benefits to the community. As the bananas mature, members anticipate increased income from the sale of high-quality banana suckers and bunch.

Mrs. Hasakya, chairperson of Kyosiga CMSG says the group plans to expand more, “We hope to expand our demonstration center into a commercial venture by multiplying suckers and enlarging our garden. The training on income-generating activities has given us the confidence to dream bigger.”

At African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE), we are committed to transforming lives through sustainable agricultural practices that not only improve food security but also boost household incomes. In partnership with Mission Alliance (M.A) and Stromme Foundation Uganda (SFU), our four-year program has brought hope and tangible progress to communities like Kyosiga.

Join us in our mission to empower communities and transform lives through sustainable agriculture. Together, we can cultivate hope and harvest change.
