Walibo Primary School’s Climate-Smart Garden Success
Mr. Amos a deputy head teacher in Walibo primary school is a passionate teacher who always desired to enable his pupils to have new learning experiences. He narrates “before AEE came in Walibo primary school, I had an idea of establishing a school demonstration garden, but we had limited funds and expertise” However, his dream came to a reality when AEE assessed schools in Waibuga sub-county and Bulanga town council, and Walibo happened to have been one of the lucky selected schools for the ECCE interventions.
AEE program team in collaboration with Walibo primary school administration decided to set up a climate-smart school demonstration garden where pupils would receive sessions on agriculture, good farming practices so they can replicate the knowledge acquired at home.
AEE supported the school with seeds of carrots, eggplants, carrots, manure, spray pump and pesticides.
As a result of the continuous care for the school gardens by the committed teachers of Walibo primary school, the learners, and the technical support team from AEE – providing monitoring and guidance; and 5 months down the road, high quality cabbages, eggplants and carrots have blossomed and are now ready for consumption.
During the routine monitoring of government primary schools by the district officials; namely: CAO, DEO and school inspectors, Walibo happened to be one of the lucky schools visited. The district officials witnessed the impact and interventions done by AEE in the school especially the established school garden. The DEO and CAO applauded AEE for the good program interventions they had observed in the school. They noted the increased enrollment of nursery children, retention in school that had resulted from sensitization of parents through parenting clubs, child friendly furniture which created a conducive learning environment, the capacity-building training of ECD educators and lower primary teachers. These had improved on the quality of education in the school.
These interventions are made possible with the support from funds accessed from NORAD through AEE’s partnership with Stromme Foundation.
