A Shift in Attitude Brings Hope to Anguru

In early 2025, the Arivu CCCD program identified a major challenge in Anguru Village—low school enrollment and minimal community participation in education initiatives. Anguru Nursery School had only 46 children (21 girls and 25 boys), and teacher attendance was inconsistent. Recognizing the need for urgent action, a community dialogue was organized in February 2025 to address these concerns.

The first meeting had a low turnout, but with the support of local church and community leaders, a second dialogue was held. This time, 90 parents (51 men and 39 women) attended, sparking a wave of positive change. Parents became actively involved in school programs, and the center management committee even traveled to lobby for caregivers’ furniture.

To strengthen community engagement, selected parents, caregivers, and committee members visited Amazu and Cinya-Awika sister Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers. After the visit, Anguru Nursery School implemented new strategies, leading to a remarkable increase in enrollment. By March 2025, the number of learners had nearly doubled to 83 (43 girls and 40 boys).

Parents also began taking greater responsibility for their children’s education. School fees payments improved by 70%, and many started contributing food items as in-kind payments. They now ensure their children arrive at school on time and have even secured two houses for female teachers who previously had to travel long distances.

This transformation shows that when a community unites for a common goal, real change happens. What impact could your involvement create in a community like Anguru?
